“Salmon Team, initiative supported by SalmonChile, announced the six athletes chosen to receive support grants”.

During the afternoon of January 11, on the Puerto Varas promenade, the six men and women selected in the initiative promoted by the salmon farming union were announced, which aims to support athletes from the south of Chile through a grant to finance their preparation and skills.

From more than 100 applications, the selected athletes were Amanda Cerna (Para Athletics), Diego Bustamante (Long Jump), María Ignacia Jaña (Fencing), Geral Soto (Canoeing Slalom), Claudia Gallardo (Taekwondo) and Enrique Villalón (Karate).

“I am happy and very grateful for the support, which is essential for athletes, especially for high performance athletes. I am very grateful for SalmonChile’s consideration in forming this team to support athletes from the South; I think it’s great. Also, this shows that there are many athletes from the South with a lot of strength and determination, and we are going to give our best”, said Amanda Cerna, in conversation with Mundo Acuícola.

“Sometimes, it is very difficult to find support from companies or sponsors in sports, but it is necessary to keep motivation intact, because every effort has its reward, that is my message to young athletes. Increasingly, companies and unions are showing interest in supporting younger athletes, from the beginning. We have been used to receive support once goals or achievements are reached, but now we see growing support from the beginning, that is, when promising sports players emerge, who strive to become high-performance athletes”, she added. The event was attended by representatives of SalmonChile and its partner companies, as well as by local authorities such as the Mayor of Puerto Varas, Tomás Garate and members of the Congress from the area. Likewise, the executive director of 2023 Santiago, Harold Mayne-Nicholls, traveled especially to the event, along with the popular pet “Fiu”.

It is important to mention that the motivation for creating the Salmon Team was born precisely on the occasion of the 2023 Santiago Pan American and Parapan American Games, a sporting event for which SalmonChile donated more than 9 tons of salmon to feed the athletes in the Olympic Village.

Thus, the Salmon Team initiative stands out as an example of successful collaboration between the public and private sectors, supporting athletes from the south of Chile and leaving a positive legacy of the 2023 Santiago Pan American and Parapan American Games.
