Chilean salmon farming increases biomass by 19% with ASC certification

With an increase of 10.5 percentage points between 2022 and 2023, Chilean salmon farmers have adopted high certification standards, committed to responsible production.

At the end of May, the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) published its 11th annual sustainability report, evidencing more than a decade of transparent data on 15 key sustainability metrics for all members in the different regions where salmon is farmed, including Chile. .

The latest report showed that, in 2023, 64% of salmon production by GSI members was certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), indicating compliance with strict environmental and social standards, a certification chosen by GSI as an transparent means to compare the progress of all its partners.

Among the members of the GSI are the Chilean salmon farming companies AquaChile, Multi offers the opportunity to provide their customers and society at large with the assurance that they operate responsibly while delivering a high quality product.

On average, Chilean salmon producers went from ASC certifying 54.5% of their production in 2022 to 65% during 2023, implying a growth of 19.2% in total.

During last year, the salmon farming company Ventisqueros managed to achieve 98% of the harvested biomass ASC certified, thanks to the great commitment and effort of all the organization’s collaborators and through a series of actions and strategies implemented by the company.

“We work closely between our teams and departments to ensure smooth and efficient operations throughout our value chain. The constant collaborative work between our Health, Production, Planning and Technical Management teams guaranteed compliance with the standard and our commercial agreements. In addition, we have achieved maturation through a process of continuous improvement since 2015, adapting and adjusting our procedures to comply with this standard, regulations, standards and the challenges facing the industry,” details Igor Stack, Technical Manager of Ventisqueros.

Of the 54 thousand tons, 40% of the certified biomass corresponded to coho salmon, and 60% to Atlantic salmon.

“In 2022, our total ASC certified production reached 64%, which demonstrates an increase of 34 percentage points by the end of 2023,” says Stack.
