The Mundo Acuícola team visited, on the morning of July 11, the facilities of the Los Arrayanes fish farm in Salmones Austral. During the visit, we observed first-hand its advanced technology in recirculation systems (RAS) and other aspects that highlight this pioneering facility in Chile in the production of Atlantic salmon post-smolt.
Since its inauguration in November 2021, Los Arrayanes has reached 80% of its operational capacity. In 2023, the fish farm produced post-smolts of 327 grams, and it is expected that a similar size will be maintained in 2024, with projections of increasing to 350 – 400 grams by 2025. This capacity allows Salmones Austral to reduce the fattening time in the sea, reducing the exposure of fish to health and environmental risks, such as algae blooms and low oxygen levels.
The unit is classified into Winter, Summer and Post – smolt rooms, with plans to expand the Post Smolt unit in the near future, in addition to projecting in the future the construction of a hatchery that allows the incubation of eggs and the first feeding of fry. It is important to highlight that both aspects are part of the original project. This expansion will seek to consolidate the production of high-quality smolts and post-smolts, ensuring the continuity of sustainable and efficient production.
One of the main challenges in Los Arrayanes is sanitary management. Fish farming implements strict biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases. This includes rigorous disinfection of trucks and equipment, as well as a quarantine system for personnel who have been in contact with other cultivation centers. These measures are essential to maintain a healthy environment for fish and ensure their well-being.
The use of RAS technology at Los Arrayanes not only allows precise control of growing conditions, but also significantly reduces the use of antibiotics. Water recirculation with a high exchange and filtration rate ensures an optimal environment for fish, minimizing the risk of disease and improving culture efficiency.
Thus, Salmones Austral’s Los Arrayanes fish farm is an outstanding example of innovation and sustainability in Chilean salmon farming. Its advanced technology, community commitment and focus on environmental sustainability demonstrate how it is possible to combine productive efficiency with social and environmental responsibility.
